External fixation techniques include the use of pins in bone that are held in place through their attachment to an external fixation device. A doctor can place the bone back in place if needed. Internal fixation techniques include the use of wire, pins, plates, and screws. Broken thumb or fractured thumb may be caused because of bone disease like osteoporosis (3) and calcium deficiencies which are more likely to increase this kind of risk. These techniques include devices that hold the bone fragments in place either inside the body (internal fixation) or outside the body (external fixation). There are eight wrist bones which are connected to the forearm bones called the radius and the ulna. A wrist fracture is a medical term for a broken wrist, which means you’ve broken one or more of the many bones in your wrist. Its also a good idea to know your test results and keep a list of the medicines you take. These fragments must be held in place while the bone heals. The wrist is a part of the body that is injured frequently, and these injuries may result in pain, a sprained wrist or even a wrist fracture. The pain and swelling from a broken finger can last for weeks. Your surgeon may use one of several operative fixation techniques to realign the bone fragments. A true fracture usually will be painful, but a broken finger may still have some range of motion and dull pain, and the individual may still be able to move it. Surgery may be needed, depending on the location of the fracture and the amount of movement between the broken fragments of bone. The main symptoms of a broken finger are pain immediately after the trauma, and sometimes a deformed finger. With either injury, the symptoms largely depend on the severity. Additionally, with high impact injuries, a thumb can of course be both sprained and fractured. During that time, regular X-rays may be needed to ensure that the bone has not slipped out of alignment. A sprained thumb is an injury to the ligaments and other soft tissues between the joints, whereas a broken thumb involves damage to the bone itself.

The cast may need to be worn for at least 4 to 6 weeks. If the bone fragments of the fracture have not moved (displaced) very much, or if the break is located in the middle (shaft) of the bone, your surgeon may be able to use a specially designed cast (spica cast) to hold the bone fragments in place.
